DOES HMRC HAVE YOUR CORRECT ADDRESS?? IF NOT YOU COULD FACE A FINE!!

Over recent months we’ve seen HMRC sending penalty notices to those who have not submitted their Self-Assessment tax returns for previous tax years. HMRC’s penalty regime has become far more aggressive than in previous years and fines being issued can date back several years and, in some cases, amount to thousands of pounds!

Change of address

We are noticing fines are being issued to those who have changed address but failed to tell HMRC. If HMRC don’t have a current address to send penalty notices to the amounts can increase over the years.

What to do if you move?

Post Re-direction

Here at Your Tax Shop we recommend that all your post is re-directed, this way you won’t miss anything important. However, if you have a limited company then your post may well be going to the registered office of the company which may not be your home address. It is important to have post re-direction set up with your registered office provider too.

Your Tax Shop client?

If you are currently a client at Your Tax Shop and you let us know your new address details we will take the headache away from you and update all the relevant departments on your behalf.

Inform HMRC of your new address

HMRC’s systems DO NOT talk to each other so here’s who you’ll need to tell:

Self-Employed and Sole Traders:

HMRC for the self-assessment tax return

If an employer – HMRC PAYE for the employer

If VAT registered – HMRC VAT

Limited Company:

HMRC for Corporation Tax

Companies House (a separate Government department not connected to HMRC) for the company record if the registered office address changes

If an employer – HMRC PAYE for the employer

If VAT registered – HMRC VAT

As a Director of a Limited Company

HMRC for your own personal self-assessment tax return

Companies House

You will need to separately update the registered office at Companies House, please note this will not update any HMRC address details; nor will updating the address at HMRC change the information stored at Companies House.

You are responsible

Remember that it is your responsibility to keep all your addresses up to date with HMRC and Companies House.
